The mission of the Far West Wheelchair Athletic Association (FWWAA) is to develop, promote, and organize community based sport and recreation programs for individuals of all ages with various physical disabilities.
The association is a 501(c)(3) non-profit that is recognized by the US Paralympics as Paralympic Sport Club Silicon Valley.
Over the past five decades, FWWAA has provided thousands of sport opportunities for persons with disabilities. These opportunities include: Recreational sport programs, competitive teams for children and adults in track and field, aquatics, archery, basketball, rugby, tennis and powersoccer.
FWWAA has served as host for regional and national competitions including the National Junior Disability Championships, National Wheelchair Basketball Association Final Four, and Paralympic Track and Field Qualifier.
The Northern California Junior Sports Camp is designed to allow youth with physical disabilities ages 5-21 to experience personal growth, enhanced self esteem, and increased independence. Campers challenge themselves in a variety of sports, gaining the same benefits from participation as non-disabled athletes.
The camp provides introductory and intermediate instruction in both recreational and competitive wheelchair sports. World-class wheelchair athletes serve as role models and provide instruction in archery, basketball, table tennis, track & field, tennis, swimming, and other sports.
Campers can choose to attend either day camp or overnight residential camp. Each participant must be capable of independently performing all activities of daily living or independently direct counselors in their need of assistance.
For many years, San Jose Fire Fighters have supported the athletes participating in the Northern California Junior Sports Camp by hosting a “Day on the Lake.”
Dozens of firefighters host the athletes and their families for a day on Coyote Lake. Boat rides, tubing and a variety of events give the athletes a break from their week-long camp. And when all the activity is done, everyone is treated to a BBQ spread featuring brisket, hamburgers, hot dogs, and dessert!
San Jose Fire Fighters look forward to this event every year, as an opportunity to support athletes that are competing to be the best in their sport.
